Blister on Lip

Blister on Lip – What now?

You have a blister on your lip but are not quite sure what it is? Does it look like a bump or could it be lip herpes? This short article is about how you can tell whether or not you have fever blisters and more importantly what you can do about it.

Fever blisters or cold sores are small red blisters that usually appear on the lips and outer edges of the mouth. They often display a clear liquid called serum and form scabs after a few days.  Along with it comes a most unpleasant itching and burning sensation. It takes a couple of days for them to disappear but sometimes it takes up to two weeks.

That is lip herpes in a nutshell. The good thing is that it’s not dangerous though highly contagious. So the last thing people want to do is kiss you and you don’t want to kiss them unless you don’t like them. The bad thing is that when it happens once it will happen again. There is no way to really get rid of it.

Herpes is caused by a virus called herpes zoster. There are two types: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Since you’re having lip blisters you’re more likely to have the first one. But it’s hard to say where you might have gotten it from. The virus can be dormant for years. It could be someone who kissed you a month ago but also someone who kissed you when you were a child.

The virus becomes active when something triggers it. Fever blisters appear after colds, fever, stress and exposure to sunlight. The blister on your lip is actually your body’s immune reaction against the virus. As I said there is for cure to cold sores. But there are a couple of things you can do.

Fever Blisters – What you can do about Lip Herpes

Yes, you can do something about it. Firstly there are remedies you can use while you’re having it. This is to make sure they won’t last long. Secondly, you can decrease the frequency of it happening, something that many people neglect. They are only concerned about lip herpes during an outbreak. Don’t be like them. Okay, on to the stuff you can do right now:

  • There are several over the counter medicines that do a great job such as Zovirax. Go to your local drugstore and ask for advice. After all I’m no doctor.
  • Apply Vaseline to the sores. That will help soften the lip and prevent the blisters from bleeding.
  • In the beginning it helps to rub an ice cube on the affected area of your lip. So the virus can’t move to the skin. Do that for about 10 minutes every hour.
  • Put a tea bag into boiling water and cool it after that. Apply it to your lip. Do that for three or four days.
  • Aloe works miracles. Get yourself a tube of Aloe Vera gel and apply it to the blisters. Do that as well when you feel that tingling and burning before the actual blisters are there.
  • Moisten your finger, dip it into common salt and press it on the sores for a couple of minutes.
  • Drink sage tea with ginger until the blisters disappear.

When applying any sort of home remedy, make sure you’re not allergic to them. Please ask your doctor if you’re not sure.

To prevent lip herpes from occurring the most important thing to take care of is your diet.Foods that contain chocolate, peanuts and other nuts, grains, peas, seeds, oatmeal and whole-wheat products should be cut out or reduced from your eating plan. It also is a matter of life style. If your body is weak and the immune system is down chances are you soon will suffer another outbreak. The healthier you live the more likely you’ll be able to keep the virus dormant.

I have a question: What if there is just 1 small blister on the lower lip. It doesn’t look like a cold sore and its not a cluster, not painful or itchy or anything. Just seems like a random little blister on the lip. Still definitely herpes?

    • admin says:

      Hi Jane,
no not definitely. But it could be herpes. Cold sores are not always painful. Is it inside the lip?
Have you noticed fluid coming out of the blister? In this case it’s likely herpes.
If it occurs again and you’re unsure about it, it’s best to consult a gp.

Question…Last night my upper lip felt chapped at the edges, so I put some Blistex on and went to bed. Now this morning both ends of my upper lip have a row of sore blisters about a half inch long. There seems to be a clear fluid coming out. I have NEVER had any type of problem like this and nothing in my lifestyle or diet has changed at all. Does this seem reasonable?

    • admin says:

It is…the virus can be dormant for years…even decades. Once it breaks out it’s likely to happen again.
This has little to do with lifestyle or diet. All the best!

when i woke up this morning i felt something itchy on my lips so i kept scratching and all of a sudden there were 3 bumps going down a line and i dont know what caused it

    • admin says:

Hi Mya, I’m no doctor but this really sounds as if this was a first outbreak of lip herpes. It’s difficult to tell what caused it. Do your parents have herpes. Any relatives or other people that are close to you? More importantly you must go and see a gp to confirm your suspicion and figure out how you can handle this issue.
